When Sergeant Pepper came out, I asked Bones what he thought and he said he hadn't listened to it. I couldn't believe it. "I've got a copy right here," I said, "let me play it for you right now!" He said that he had a copy, for sure, but that it
was still shrink-wrapped and he didn't want to listen to it because he didn't want anyone to say he was influenced by the Beatles' techniques. I could dig it. I did the same thing a few years later when I was producing the comedy duo the "Congress of Wonders" for Fantasy Records. I was using sound effects quite extensively and yet I hadn't heard, and didn't want to hear, the Firesign Theater - who I later found had used FX brilliantly; far better than all the rest of us.
