Phill Sawyer 1988 (detail of SF Chronicle photo by Brant Ward)

The following pages contain a history of my path through the West Coast music, theater and film scene from 1963 to the present - it is a work in-progress.

The current content is a rough, incomplete framework of my experience in the Hollywood recording world of the 1960's, the San Francisco music scene of the late 60's / early 70's and my compositions with Jerry Garcia, Paul Kantner, Graham Nash and others, the West Coast free-improvisational, art music and performance art wonder years of the 1970's, the terrific recording projects with a great friend and sensational musician, Denny Zeitlin, my times with Phil Kaufman on "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "The Wanderers", my sound design and compositional work with theater and dance in the 1980's and 1990's - including the musical, "Cactus", and my work in motion picture sound mixing, design and education in the 1990's.

Links in the text point to photographs and/or more detailed recollections or additional information. The photos are mostly from my own collection, others are from books, and almost no permissions have yet been requested or granted.
